Hamburg Half: Weather Forecast and Gear Choice
April in Hamburg can throw anything at you. Here's how to choose your race-day outfit based on temperature, wind, and rain probability.
Hamburg Half: Weather Forecast and Gear Choice
If there's one certainty about running in Hamburg in April, it's this: there are no certainties. The North Sea influence means you could face sunshine and 15°C, or you could be staring down 8°C with a stiff headwind off the Elbe. What you wear on race day can make or break your comfort — and your performance.

Current Forecast Overview
The latest models suggest a cool start around 7–9°C that warms to 12–14°C by midday, with partly cloudy skies and a moderate easterly breeze. There's a low chance of light drizzle in the early hours, but it should clear before the main wave starts.
This is actually ideal marathon weather — cool enough to prevent overheating, warm enough that you won't need heavy layers.
What to Wear: A Temperature Guide
10–14°C (Expected Conditions)
- Top: Lightweight, moisture-wicking singlet or short-sleeve racing shirt
- Bottom: Split shorts or half-tights — whatever you've trained in
- Accessories: Arm warmers are the MVP here. Start with them up, push them down as you warm up. No need to carry them or throw them away.
- Head: A lightweight cap if rain is expected — keeps water out of your eyes
Below 10°C (If It's Colder Than Expected)
- Top: Long-sleeve technical shirt or a singlet with a throwaway layer (an old shirt you can discard at km 3)
- Accessories: Light gloves — your hands lose heat fastest, and cold fingers are a distraction
- Ears: A thin headband or buff can make a big difference
Above 14°C (If It's Warmer Than Expected)
- Keep it minimal: Singlet, shorts, no accessories
- Sun protection: Sunglasses and sunscreen on exposed skin
- Hydration adjustment: Drink at every aid station, don't skip any
Shoe Selection
This is not the day to break in new shoes. Wear the pair you've logged at least 50 km in during training.
- Carbon-plated racers (Nike Vaporfly, Adidas Adios Pro, Asics Metaspeed, etc.) — if you've trained in them and they're comfortable over 15+ km, this is their moment
- Standard racing flats — a reliable, lightweight option that doesn't require adaptation
- Reconsider if rain is heavy: Wet roads can be slippery. Make sure your shoe has decent grip, especially in corners.
Race Morning Checklist
- Check the forecast one final time on Saturday evening
- Lay out your full outfit, including backup layers
- Apply body glide / anti-chafe products to inner thighs, underarms, and nipples
- Pin your bib on the night before
- Pack a warm jacket for post-race — you'll cool down fast after the finish
The Golden Rule of Race-Day Gear
Nothing new on race day. If you haven't tested it in training, leave it at home. That includes socks, underwear, hats, and sunglasses. Chafing at kilometer 18 is not something you want to discover for the first time during a race.
Dress for the conditions, trust your preparation, and enjoy the run through Hamburg! 🌧️☀️
